Vietnam traditional festivals in March Worshipping Forest Festival of the Nung
Time: the 29th day of the first lunar month.
Location: Muong Khuong District, Lao Cai Province.
Objects of worship: Gods of village and tree.
Activities: Worship two ancient trees (Father and Mother trees), and worship people who sacrifice their life for reclaiming the village. Games: contest of leng hao, lan co singing, swinging, wood chess playing.

Time: the 12th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Phu Ninh Commune, Phu Ninh District, Phu Tho Province.
Objects of worship: Kings Hung.
Activities: Offering raw cock (slaughter and pluck feather), the insides of the cock is boiled and rolled by pickled scallion (according to the old tale, My Nuong came there and found a kind of sweet-smelling grass, good eating, offered the king, that is pickled scallion).

Vietnam traditional festivals in March Duc Bac Festival
Time: The 1st day of the second lunar month and from the 11th day to the 12th day of the sixth lunar month.
Location: Duc Bac Commune, Lap Thach District, Vinh Phuc Province.
Objects of worship: Thanh Ong, Princess Bat Nan (General of Hai Ba Trung) and the ancestor of xoan singing.
Activities: Cau dinh ceremony (pray for giving birth a son), racing boats to Phuong Lau (the other bank of the river) then striking for the basket of rice (or sheaf of rice seeds) and return, xoan singing (folk song of Vinh - Phu Provinces).

Time: The 15th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Viem Xa Village, Hoa Long Commune, Yen Phong District, Bac Ninh Province.
Objects of worship: Vua Ba - the ancestor of quan ho folk songs.
Activities: quan cau dao singing, quan ho trum dau singing, and game of vieing for water ball.

Time: the 7th to the 10th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Dang Cuong Commune, An Duong District, Hai Phong City.
Objects of worship: Cao Son, Qui Minh and Chang Rong - The local genie, assist Hung King against Thuc troop.
Activities: Worship to the genie, contests of chung cake, giay cake, wrestling.

Traditional festivals in Hung Yen province:
Vietnam traditional festivals in March Chu Dong Tu Festival
Time: From the 10th to the 12th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Da Hoa Temple and Da Trach Temple, Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province.
Objects of worship: Chu Dong Tu and his two wives: Princess Tien Dung and Princess Tay Sa.
Activities: The procession of 9 communes from communal houses to Da Hoa Temple; the water procession from Hong River (Red River) to Da Trach Temple of 8 other communes; trong quan singing.
Chu Dong Tu is one of four immortal gods in the Vietnamese pantheon. The festival annually takes Location from the 10th to the 12th day of the second lunar month at two temples, Da Hoa and Da Trach, in Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province.
Starting from Ha Noi, visitors can travel downstream on the Red River by boat or canoe, or go by motorbike along the dyke of the Red River for 20 km. During the festival, pilgrims in colorful dress converge on the two temples, Da Hoa and Da Trach.
At Da Hoa Temple
In the early morning of the 10th, the inhabitants of nine communes hold a long procession along the dyke of the Red River to Da Hoa Temple. Marching in the van of the procession is Hoang Trach Commune. Following are Dong Que, Bang Nha, Phu Thi, Phuc Trach, Thiet Tru, Nhan Thap, Da Hoa communes, and finally Me So Commune.
When the procession reaches the temple, palanquins and offerings are locatedd at a stipulated Location. Then, the members of the procession and pilgrims begin the opening ceremony at the courtyard.
As the opening ceremony and incense presenting ceremony end, people participate in traditional games that take Location during day and night.
At Da Trach Temple
In the morning of the 10th, residents of Da Trach, Ham Tu, Yen Phu, Dong Tao and Tu Dan communes, Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province hold a procession from Da Trach Temple to the Red River to get water.
The water procession is preceded by a 20 meter-long dragon. Thirty strong young men carry the dragon and dance in the rhythm of drumbeats, which makes the procession jubilant. Following are two rows of women in colorful dresses holding flags, gongs and drums, and parasols. Young women perform a dance with conical hats and castanets with coins stringed. Young men carry palanquins holding a jar, and a profusely decorated stick and conic hat - the two magic articles bestowed on Chu Dong Tu by the Buddha. Then come three palanquins containing the tablets of Chu Dong Tu and his two wives. The end is God of Carp palanquin " Be ngu than quan". Notable men in traditional dresses go after the procession.
When the procession arrives at the riverbank, the boats of Khoai Chau District sail downstream the Red River to meet the procession of Mai Dong Commune (Hung Yen Province), Khai Thai and Tu Nhien Communes (Ha Tay Province). They join into a long procession and row to middle of the river to get water. The procession brings water to the temple at 11.30 a.m and the opening ceremony begins.
After the water palanquin is located in the temple, palanquins of gods are located in the courtyard, then the dragon dancing group comes to the temple's door worship god; senh tien dance and conical hats dance are performed on Tien Bridge.
After the opening ceremony, various games and activities are organized such as wrestling, human chess, and traditional and religious dances.

Location: Cam Linh Commune and Tong Bat Commune, Ba Vi District, Ha Tay Province.

Activities: Fish catching competition to worship Tan Vien Genie, making fish banquet, water puppetry, dum singing (singing dialogues between boys and girls), dao dia game.

Time: The 12th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Quoc Oai District, Ha Tay Province.
Objects of worship: Hoang Dao, General of Hai Ba Trung.
Activities: A solemn procession from Dau House (worship the General) to the communal house. Young men of the village wear uniform, weapons symbolizes for the old battle of the General.

Time: the 4th to the 6th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Dai Lo Hamlet, Ninh So Commune, Thuong Tin District, Ha Tay Province.
Objects of worship: Four ladyship Saints (Tu vi Thanh Nuong).
Activities: Worshipping, procession of royal honour-conferring diploma, and water procession.

Bat Trang Village is famous for pottery. The village is located near the bank of the river, includes sacred communal house, pagoda, temple, shrine. The village festival involves water procession, ancestral tablet washing, a procession of ancestral tablet to the communal house to worship. The offering to the village's tutelary god is a barbecued young fat buffalo. They put the whole buffalo on the large table with six big feasts and four trays of steamed glutinous rice. After worshipping, the offerings are shared out for every family.

Time: the 16th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Nguyen Khe Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Phu Dong Thien Vuong.
Activities: A big procession of 16 groups with meticulous preparing. 60 young men and over 100 old people take part in the procession.
Festivals in Vietnam in March Choosing Bridegroom Festival
Time: The 2nd day of the second lunar month.
Location: Duong Yen Village, Xuan Non Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Lady General Le Thi Hoa in Hai Ba Trung Time.
Activities: Unique festival, in order to choose a talented and righteous bridegroom for Lady General Le Hoa.
According to the legend, Lady General Le Thi Hoa had taken part in fighting Nam Han aggressors and been conferred as “Nu su anh phong” (heroic and educated woman) by Hai Ba Trung. She returned and set up the village, developed agriculture. In order to commemorate her merit, every year on the 2nd day of the second lunar month, villagers of Duong Yen organize the Choosing Bridegroom Festival with very unique ceremony and traditional games to choose a talented and righteous bridegroom for the Lady General.
The festival opens with the ceremony of returning home to pay thanks to ancestors after achieving academic honors of Lady General Le Hoa. After that, two lads perform unique items in the contest of choosing bridegroom. They have to shows of telling ve, introducing themselves, transplanting rice seedlings, ploughing fields, hooking frogs, catching pigs, “chong cho” (rouse dog to bark loudly).

Location: Co Nhue Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Dong Chinh vuong (the 5th son of King Le Thai To) who had merit of fighting Ming aggressors, his wife and Princess Ta Minh Hien.
Activities: A palanquin procession, reporting ritual to god, boi chess playing, human chess, doi (repartee) singing, cock fighting.

Time: the 12th to the 15th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Cot Communal House, Yen Hoa Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Gods: Cao Son, Diem La, Moc Tinh, two gods of the soil (Royal Lady Trinh Thuc and top-ranking General Trang Han anh linh).
Activities: A procession of 7 palanquins (five for imperial votive tablets, one for royal honor-conferring diploma and incense serving, one for water jar).

Time: The 6th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Dong Nhan Temple, Dong Nhan Ward, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Hai Ba Trung.
Activities: Sacrifices-offering ceremony of the court, dancing of worshipping lamp.
Dong Nhan Temple is located in Dong Nhan Precinct, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi. The festival of Dong Nhan Temple is held annually from the 3rd to the 6th day of the second lunar month.
The temple was established in honor of Hai Ba Trung (Two Trung Sisters) who were proclaimed the heroines of Vietnam as they greatly contributed to the defeat of the Dong Han invaders and to the glorious pages of the history of the country.
The main festival occurs on the 5th day when there is a ceremony for bathing the statues, opening the back palace, making sacrifices, and light dancing.
A solemn procession of the statues from the temple to the Hong River is followed by many exciting activities at the completion of the bathing ceremony, including the altar-light dance. This dance is performed by 12 young beautiful girls in colorful dresses holding two lights in their hands. The festival is finished with an incense burning ceremony.

Activities: Thuong Do and Ha Do ceremonies.
Festivals in Vietnam in March Festival of Five Moc Villages
Time: The 9th to the 11th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Moc Quan Nhan, Moc Chinh Kinh, Moc Cu Loc, Moc Giap Nhat, Moc Phung Khoang, in Trung Hoa Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Doan Thuong, La Lieu, Hung Lang Cong, and Phung Luong.
Activities: A procession of palanquin pass 5 villages, dragon dancing, and lion dancing.
This big festival is organized for 5 Moc Villages (every 5-year is held in large-scale). On the main festival day (the 11th day of the second lunar month), the procession of palanquin starts from Phung Khoang Communal House to Giap Nhat Communal House. When passing any village, the people of this village welcome, then join in the procession. The procession of 5 villages follows each other last over 1km with flags, fans, alter table... There are many games in the festival such as wrestling, cock fighting, Chinese chess playing, cheo singing...

Location: Cao Dinh Hamlet, Xuan Dinh Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Ly Phuc Man, General of Ly Dynasty (defeated Luong and Lam Ap aggressors, defending the Van Xuan Country).
Activities: A palanquin procession, human chess playing, martial art performance, cock fighting, wrestling.

Time: the 13th day of the second lunar month, the birthdays of two saints.
Location: Buoi Ward, Tay Ho District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Duc Thanh Royal Highest (Cong Le), Ve quoc Royal Highest (Ca Le).
Activities: Dance of skiff rowing (dance on shore) with the participation of 36 young men, called giai boi.

Time: the 5th to the 6th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Luong Qui Hamlet, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Three generals: Mr. Thong, Mr. Qui, and Mr. Giang.
Activities: Rice cooking contest (7 steps: cut betel-nut into segments and prepare betel quid, card running, water pulling, rice husking, chicken catching and killing, and cooking rice). The contest recall the tale of training soldiers of three generals.

Traditional festivals in Da Nang City:
Festivals in Vietnam in March Quan Am Festival
Time: From the 18th to the 20th day of the second lunar month, the main festival day is on the 19th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Avalokitesvara Pagoda, Ngu Hanh Son District, Da Nang City.
Objects of worship: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
Activities: The procession of the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisttava, floating lamps on the river and other philanthropic activities.
Quan Am (Avalokitesvara) Festival on Ngu Hanh Son, Da Nang is organized on the 19th day of the second lunar month. Like other traditional festivals, Quan Am (Avalokitesvara) Festival on Ngu Hanh Son, Da Nang consists of two parts: the religious ceremony and the festival itself. The former takes Location with the rituals of Buddhism.
The ceremony to worship spring with full rituals is usually held on the evening of the 18th of the second lunar month. The notables of Hoa Hai, Hoa Quy and Bac My An Wards perform the rites of worshipping, reading oration and praying for safe and sound to everybody.
The ceremony of beginning sutra chanting occurs on the early morning of the 19th of the second lunar month. This ceremony is to pray for peaceful country and prosperous people. It is held in the sanctuary of Quan The Am (Avalokitesvara) Pagoda and conducted by the monks. This ritual shows the solemnity the belief of Buddhism.
The ceremony of giving alms to the wandering souls is held on the afternoon of the last day of the festival. The ceremony is dedicated to patron saint, god of earth and spirits of the death. The monks pray the Buddha for peace and happiness to the living and for freedom from suffering to the souls of the death. Normally, the Buddhist bereaved gives the list of the deceased to the pagoda in advance. The master of ceremonies must be a superior bonze.
The preaching sessions about culture, arts, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and the association between the Buddhist culture and traditional culture in the history of the nation is also part of the festival.
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue procession is held on the morning of the 19th day. Four people carry a palanquin that contains a stone statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisttava standing on the lotus-shaped throne. She has a look of refined beauty with a gentle smile like the image of a mother. The palanquin goes first and is accompanied by Buddhist followers.

Festivals in Vietnam in March Nghinh Co Festival at Dinh Co Shrine
Time: The 12th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Long Hai Town, Long Dien District, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province.
Objects of worship: “Co” (young lady) is named as Le Thi Hong Thuy.
Activities: Water festival (procession is used by boats and ships on the sea); many people take part in.
The birth anniversary of co becomes the big festival, attracts many visitors from other provinces. The teams of unicorn dancing, ngu am (cantanets) musical band from many southern provinces come to add the fun.
Ceremonies in the festival: cau an (pray for peace) in the main sanctuary at the night before while Flower festival takes Location outside. A procession takes Location in the morning of the 12th day on tens of decorated barges to pray for nice sky and calm sea, full of fish and shrimp in the hold of boat.

Festivals in Vietnam in March Ky Yen Festival at Binh Dong Communal House
Time: From the 10th to the 14th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Ward 7, District 8, Ho Chi Minh City.
Objects of worship: Masters of vocational training in the hamlet.
Activities: Worshiping ceremony of the ancestor of the work and long for peace ceremony.

Binh Dong Communal House lies on the bank of Ba Tang canal which is one of the two communal houses with the biggest of visitors in the city. The Ky Yen Festival includes: ceremony of worshipping the inventors, memorize the masters of vocational training in the hamlet; ceremony of reciting the Buddhist scriptures for long peace, ceremonies of worshipping god, tien hien, hau hien (sages of former time), who are generations reclain virgin soil, set up the hamlet and built welfare constructions for the hamlet. Boi (tuong) singing for worshipping god.
Festivals in Vietnam in March Ky Yen Festival at Truong Tho Communal House
Time: the 17th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City.
Objects of worship: The village's tutelary god, tien hien, hau hien(sages of former time).
Activities: The offering must be a living pig. There is no boi (tuong) singing as many other communal houses in the South, because taboo with genies.
Festivals in Vietnam in March Ong Dia Temple Festival
Time: The 2nd day of the second lunar month.
Location: 125 Le Loi Street, Ward 3, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City.
Objects of worship: Genie of the earth Phuc Duc Chinh Than and many other popular genies.
Activities: Bong roi singing, tuong (classical drama) performance.
Ong Dia Temple was built early in the 19th century, honoured in 1852 by King Tu Duc. Every year, the festival is held on the 2nd day of the second lunar month, that is the birth anniversary of the Earth genie Phuc Duc Chinh Than. This festival represents for temple festivals in Ho Chi Minh City and Southern part with the beginning ceremony “giong trong khai trang” beating drum), then followed “moi trau” rite by singing of bong roi, which invites deities to attend the ceremony. A comedy classical drama called “Dia Nang” is performed. Two characters Ong Dia (a genie of the earth) and Nang Tien (a fairy), put together a criticism of the wrong doings of the feudal regime. The festival then concludes with a distribution of gifts.
After that, traditional artists perform dances of mam vang (golden tray), mam bac (silver tray) and do choi (toy game). At the end of the festival is the ceremony of giving gifts.
Festivals in Vietnam in March The death anniversary of the founder of jewelry
Time: The 7th to the 9th day of the second lunar month.
Location: Le Chau Congregation, 586 Tran Hung Dao, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City.
Objects of worship: The founder of jewelry.
Activities: Ancestor's death anniversary.
The festival includes two rites: the sacrifices - offering ceremony to the ancestor on two first days, and the ceremony of sacrifices - offering to the tien hien, hau hien (sages of former time) on the last day. On the evening of the 7th day, a performance of cai luong (reformed Theatre) is performed by artists and goldsmiths. During the festival, goldsmiths from Ho Chi Minh City and Southern provinces gather to worship ancestor, exchange experiences as well as help each other to develop jewelery trades of the ancestral. Those who could not attend the anniversary may make offering to the ancestors at home, but only after the ancestor's death anniversary that held in Le Chau Congregation.
